What are the question marks on the map in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? Traveling through the Paldea region in Scarlet and Violet, you must use the world map. Most icons are self-explanatory, and you won’t have to think much to understand the label’s meaning. Icons such as Tera Raid or Little Wings for Fast Travel will not raise questions from anyone. But if a newbie sees a strange question mark, they will immediately want to check out this place. Well, if you are wondering what the question marks on the map are in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, our guide will help you figure it out.

(Updated on August 22, 2024 – Fact-checked, fixed inconsistencies, and updated links).

What Are the Question Marks on the Map in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

If you have just started your adventure in the Paldea region by opening the in-game map, you will probably see a lot of question marks. Unlike other icons on the map, question marks can appear and disappear and are confusing at first. However, this is not surprising, and you see it for yourself by visiting one of these places.

Question marks indicate a massive spawn of one type of Pokémon spawning at a specific point. There is no exact information about how many Pokémon can appear, but often, it is 30 or more individuals. Although the question mark does not indicate the name of the Pokémon, you can navigate based on the habitats of each of them. For example, if you see a question mark in the southern part of Casseroya Lake, it might be a Croagunk, but if it’s on a grassy field near Alfornada, it might be a Murkrow. However, each area is home to a large variety of Pokémon, so you can’t be sure until you visit that location. But if you’re a rookie, you should visit every question mark.

In addition, these outbreaks of Pokemon spawn are a treasure for any Shiny hunter. By encountering more than 30 Pokémon of the same species at once, you have the best chance of getting a Shiny version of any Pokémon. In addition, this Shiny hunting option is quite budget-friendly because you don’t have to use sandwiches or a Shiny Charm.
