Dark Pixel Digital – a film studio – recently posted a short Youtube video showing us what would happen if Mario and crew acquired ships and vehicles from the Star Wars universe. Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser and Bowser Jr., and Princess Peach all come together for three minutes of controlled chaos in a Mario Kart race from Rainbow Road to the Death Star.

The video captures Mario Kart’s hilarious havoc perfectly on Mario’s path to destroy the Koopa Kingdom’s (probably stolen) planet-destroying super-weapon. Only two things were wrong with the video. First, Mario dodges a blue shell by braking into second place. In the games, the shell homes in on the player in the lead at the time of firing and doesn’t change targets. The second error was that Luigi didn’t win by doing nothing.

Star Kart brings up an interesting point for the Mario Kart franchise. As of Mario Kart 8, the racers have been in space, underwater, upside-down and sideways, but ultimately rooted to a track under their karts. Diddy Kong Racing for the N64 featured planes that, although still following a linear course, allowed movement in all directions. How exciting it would be if, in the next iteration, Mario et al took to the skies in planes, ships, and hover cars. Maybe there could even be a multi-vehicle course where the racers change vehicles partway through? Leave a comment and let us know what you think should be the next twist in the Mario Kart series!
