Blade Runner 2 has a release date, even though it has not begun shooting yet. According to Deadline, the sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner will be released on January 12, 2018. Harrison Ford will be reprising his role as Rick Deckard, and Ryan Gosling is attached to the project as well.
The original film is based on Philip K. Dick’s short story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Directed by Ridley Scott, it has withstood the test of time and is held in extremely high regard as a science fiction classic. Although Scott is not directing Blade Runner 2, he did help conceive the story that the screenplay was adapted from. Denis Villeneuve, best known for 2013’s Prisoners and 2015’s Sicario, will sit in the director’s chair. The film is scheduled to begin filming this July.
Blade Runner tells the story of a dystopian future, where genetically engineered androids, called replicants, are used for dangerous jobs. When replicants decide to go against their programming and try to lead normal lives, specially trained police officers hunt them down and kill them. Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard is one of these officers, known as a Blade Runner. The film questions science, religion, and the very nature of what it means to be human. Blade Runner 2 is set decades after the original, although little is known about the plot other than that Ford is returning.
Blade Runner combined elements of action, science fiction, and film noir to create a truly unique film that is still studied and written about today. Come early 2018, we will see if the sequel can live up to some lofty expectations. Let’s allow Rutger Hauer to sign this one off:
