Fans who have petitioned online for years, and more recently using the hashtag #WeWantMoreXFiles, are finally getting their wish. More X-Files stories in novels, featuring both Mulder and Scully. It may not be exactly how they’d expect a set of X-Files prequel stories to be released, but beggers can’t be choosers I guess?

Entertainment Weekly released the details today:

…each story is set in the spring of 1979, when serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news. The books follow Mulder and Scully as they experience life-changing events that set them on the path to becoming the FBI agents depicted in by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on the cult-favorite TV show The X-Files.

In the original series run, fans and viewers knew enough about the main characters, but the details were really there just to place Mulder and Scully in supernatural scenarios they found themselves in. Mulder was a guy who was thrust into the world after his sister was apparently abducted by aliens, and Scully found herself in the thick of things as an MD working for the FBI.

The new books will be a great way for fans to peek into those past events. The young-adult novels will be titled The X-Files Origins. Mulder’s book will follow him as a 17-year old, it will be called Agent of Chaos and will be written by Kami Garcia (Beautiful Creatures, Dangerous Creatures). Scully’s storyline will follow her as a 15-year old and will be titled Devil’s Advocate, written by Jonathan Maberry (Assassin’s Code, Dead of Night). Both books will be published by Imprint/Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.

The most recent set of episodes of The X-Files has been a huge success. With mixed reviews in the first couple of hours in its return, the positive buzz has definitely picked up. It remains to be seen just how young the new novels will skew as “young-adult” content. Regardless, a more fleshed out backstory (especially with Mulder) could be a real cool new way to connect with our favorite FBI agents.

Expect to see the books on shelves in January of 2017.
