What We Know So Far About the Live-Action Minecraft Movie
The live-action Minecraft movie was first teased back in April 2022, with Jason Momoa in talks with Warner Bros to star in the film. The company has been working on releasing a project inspired by the incredibly popular video game franchise for several years now.
Originally, a movie based on the game was supposed to be released on March 4, 2022, but with no reason given, it never happened.
Dune producer Mary Parent and Roy Lee are slated to produce the film. Late producer Jill Messick will also receive posthumous producing credit for helping develop the film prior to her untimely passing in 2018.
The film will also be executive producers by Jon Berg (Aquaman 2018), Cale Boyter (Dune 2021), and Jon Spaihts.
Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess will be directing the live-action Minecraft movie alongside Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney, star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Minecraft developer Mojang provided details on the movie’s story and characters in a 2019 interview.
He highlighted that the film would center “on a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
Jason Mamoa is still set to star in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, slated for December 25, 2023. An official teaser trailer for the film was released in March 2023, with the film still slated for release this year.
The live-action Minecraft film will be officially released in theaters on April 4, 2023. For more of the latest news on movies, video games, and all things entertainment, please be sure to keep reading The Nerd Stash!
