With Honkai Star Rail here, people are eager to collect all the game’s cast members. While some want them just for the looks, others want the best characters to steamroll the most challenging fights in the game. If you didn’t know, Honkai Star Rail has a pity system that increases your chances of getting your desired 5-star character. Since the latest game doesn’t explain it, we’ll cover it in this guide.
Honkai Star Rail’s Pity System

Honkai Star Rail’s pity system works with the same 50% chance basis that Genshin Impact has. Whenever you pull for a limited-time banner, there’s a chance you’ll get the featured 5-star character or a random one. Beyond that, you are guaranteed to get a 5-star character once you do 90 pulls. In other words, after you spend 90 Star Rail Passes. Yet, the pity system introduces “soft” and “hard pity” to make tracking your progress and, most importantly, managing your currency easier.
Soft Pity Explained
Soft pity kicks in once you’ve reached your 70th pull or, in other words, after you’ve spent 70 Star Rail Passes. After spending 70 of this currency, you’ll get an increased chance of getting a 5-star character with each subsequent pull. Some people get a 5-star on their 75th pull, and others before that. It’s all a matter of luck.

Hard Pity Explained
Hard pity starts when you reach your 90th pull. When you reach this, it means you’ll get a 5-star character no matter what. Yet, it doesn’t mean you’ll get the one featured on the limited-time banner. As we mentioned, Honkai Star Rail’s pity system works with a 50% chance. If you reach hard pity and get a random 5-star, you lose the 50% chance; however, this isn’t bad. After losing the 50% chance, the next 5-star character you get will be the featured one. That’s a 100% guarantee. Still, you’ll need to grind or spend money to reach that point.
Now that the game is starting and there’s no way to track your pity inside the game, we recommend that you keep track of your pulls. If you want to get Seele, you should start spending your Star Rail Passes hoping to get her. If you don’t get her, you can try again for a guaranteed pull, but that means you’ll need a lot of Stellar Jade. There are many ways to get it inside the game, so you’ll constantly pull for your desired 5-star.
