Fans wonder if Bungie will ever release a sequel to Destiny 2, a game fans have tantalizingly called Destiny 3. Destiny 2 launched back in 2017 and has received multiple updates and expansions. The upcoming The Final Shape expansion will end the saga established in the early updates. Many feel that after the release of The Final Shape, Bungie should move on to a proper sequel to Destiny 2 with Destiny 3. Given the success of the first two Destiny games, a third title in the series feels inevitable. However, will there be a Destiny 3?
Will Bungie Make a Destiny 3?
The first two Destiny games are successful enough that the brand will not end with the last expansion in Destiny 2. The titles have proven profitable for Bungie, and Bungie’s parent company, Sony. A Destiny 2 sequel will likely get released — eventually.
That said, it doesn’t seem like Bungie is in a hurry to produce Destiny 3. In 2021, Destiny 2‘s Design Director, Jacob Benton, spoke in an interview with 4gamer.net about future expansions. Benton said in the interview, “I don’t think it’s the right direction for Destiny 2 to bring the rest to Destiny 3.”
Based on Benton’s words, it doesn’t appear that Bungie intends to make Destiny 3 soon. The company is currently invested in making more expansions and continuing the story. Benton hints that the franchise may expand into other media, suggesting the Destiny brand may continue in film or television.
While Destiny 3 may not be coming soon, the franchise may receive a proper follow-up outside of video games. However, in the two years since Benton’s interview with 4gamer.net, there have not been any official announcements of a new Destiny project outside Destiny 2.
How Long Will Bungie Support Destiny 2 Before Destiny 3?
Destiny 2 is set to release The Final Shape expansion sometime in 2024 as part of its seventh year. The Final Shape is a direct follow-up to the Lightfall expansion and will serve as the end of the game’s first saga, the “Light and Darkness Saga.”
There have been hints and speculations that the Destiny 2 story could expand beyond the “Light and Darkness Saga.” The next expansions after The Final Shape may be part of a new saga, focusing on new story elements and characters for the Destiny universe.
We believe Bungie will continue updating, adding expansions, and releasing seasonal content to Destiny 2 until the end of the current console lifespan. It’s also possible that Bungie will port Destiny 2 onto the next-gen consoles and continue releasing expansions, similarly to what Rockstar Games did with GTA V.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
