This week’s Secret Invasion finally put Gravik’s master plan into focus and it all has to do with the Harvest. This is the name given to a top-secret serum created by none other than Nick Fury and a handful of Skrulls. It involves the DNA of multiple Marvel superheroes and could easily give Gravik the upper hand in his war on Earth. Let’s look at this potential weapon in the Disney+ series and discuss why Nick Fury would make such a thing.
What Is the Harvest in Secret Invasion?
The Harvest has its origins in Avengers: Endgame. If you don’t remember, the film featured a climactic battle between the heroes of Earth and Thanos. While the heroes came out on top, they left behind a battlefield of blood and sweat. This is where Nick Fury comes in. It is revealed in the Marvel show that he sent a troop of Skrulls to gather all that superhero blood spilled on the ground.
This means that Fury holds the DNA samples of just about every superhero in the MCU. These samples were eventually harvested into a single serum known as the Harvest. Unfortunately, one of the Skrulls that Fury sent in to retrieve this DNA was Gravik. Now, he plans to seek out that serum and use it to gain every Avenger-level superpower. This could give him the powers of Captain America, Thor, Scarlet Witch, the Hulk, and even Captain Marvel, essentially making him an unstoppable force.
Why Create Such a Concoction?
The people of Earth within the MCU have not had a good time lately. Beyond the everyday supervillain threatening the world, half of the population spent five years snapped out of existence. One of those happened to be Nick Fury. Upon his return to the land of the living, Fury has clearly been changed by his experiences. Having spent so much time and effort trying to protect Earth and then being caught in the Blip clearly affected him emotionally.
Seeing the opportunity to harvest this superhero DNA would clearly be appealing to someone like Nick Fury. While Secret Invasion has yet to go into detail as to exactly why he made the Harvest, it is not hard to assume his reasons. Perhaps it was a fail-safe if all the Earth’s heroes vanished or were defeated. That DNA could be used to make more heroes to defend Earth.
It seems that the good guys keep making the same mistakes over and over in their attempts to save the world. Look at Tony Stark who wanted to keep the Earth safe and therefore made Ultron, a sentient suit of armor. We all know how that turned out. In trying to keep the world safe, he put it in terrible danger. So, is Nick Fury doing the same thing with the Harvest? Will his attempt to keep Earth safe backfire and give Gravik the upper hand?
The episode ends with Fury agreeing to hand the Harvest over to Gravik, who promised to stop his campaign of evil in exchange. However, Fury is too hard to read to truly know what motives he has behind that eyepatch. The Secret Invasion finale airs on July 26.
