Yes, that does mean the boxing ring. Over three decades ago, a bunch of Scrubbs made Superman try to beat up world champ Muhammad Ali. No, I’m not insulting boxing fans or comic book fans. That’s what the alien race behind the fictional boxing match was called: the Scrubb. Those same aliens have returned, and this time, Superman will be up against Harley Quinn.
The idea comes directly from Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. While some may find the timing of this successor questionable in wake of the champion’s recent death, artist Neal Adams stated “We’re going to do a take-off on the book. And we’re going to do it with all good humor and fun and pleasantness.” Adams was offered the chance to do a Harley Quinn Story after seemingly jumping back and forth between Superman and Batman a couple times. Naturally, he leaped at the chance.
The original Superman vs. Muhammad Ali had the Scrubb forcing Superman into the fight. Heaven knows why the Man of Steel didn’t just kick their spaceship out of the solar system instead, but the story was well-received worldwide. Harley’s Little Black Book #5, a collaboration between Neal Adams, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, will be a celebration of the same spirit that made the story so popular. That may prove slightly more difficult this time around, though. Let’s face it, there’s no way Harley Quinn’s going to fight fair.
The fight between Superman and Harley Quinn will be the fifth entry in the Harley’s Little Black Book series and will consist of 48 full-color pages. The expected release date for the book is August 24, 2016, at a retail price of around $4.99. As for how closely it will follow the plot of its source material, fans will have to wait and find that out for themselves.
