Depending on your build, you can utilize different technology, like various upscaling software. Due to an exclusive deal with AMD, Starfield may not have other upscaling technology like NVIDIA’s DLSS, making only FSR available if you have an AMD GPU. According to AMD executive and Alienware co-founder Frank Azor, Bethesda could add other software from competitors despite the deal. This puts the decision on the developer and publisher rather than their PC partner.

Upscaling technology lifts weight off your PC as you try to balance ideal resolution, settings, and frame rate. Through AI, its reconstruction of frames makes it easier to run games at high settings, intensive options like ray tracing, and a smooth frame rate. It is what makes the most ambitious games possible, especially on PCs that are not the beefiest. As technologies like DLSS or FSR get upgraded, they become more effective in improving your experience.

AMD Exclusive Deal Does Not Block Starfield Adding DLSS

Azor’s response comes from an interview with The Verge. While some details remain unclear due to specifics of the deal being unable to be revealed, he said, “if they [Bethesda] want to do DLSS, they have AMD’s full support.” He clarified that deals like this involve conversations that encourage prioritization on FSR but always agree to let DLSS be used when it is mentioned.

The questions about whether we will get DLSS or Intel’s XeSS from Starfield come from pre-load files uncovered that only show support for AMD. Bethesda has not commented on the situation for Intel or NVIDIA owners.

We will find out when the game releases on September 6 if Starfield will only support AMD’s FSR or if it will have broader support. We may find out earlier on September 1 for people with early access because of their pre-ordered editions. As a day one patch should be expected like for any big game, it is unclear if it will arrive when the game officially launches or for early access players. A day-one patch could provide the much-requested addition of DLSS and XeSS, but it is not guaranteed.
