What is Penitence mode in Cult of the Lamb, and how does it work? Penitence mode is part of the Cult of the Lamb and Don’t Starve Together cross-promotion. DST received a new sheep companion that looks like Lambert, while Cult of the Lamb gained Webber as a follower and the Penitence mode. Patch 1.2.6 includes the new game mode and Webber for free. However, neither Webber nor Penitence mode is available as soon as you download the update. You must accomplish something in-game to unlock them.
How To Unlock Penitence Mode in Cult of the Lamb
You unlock Penitence mode in Cult of the Lamb when you summon Webber as a follower. Webber is a spider-like creature introduced in one of the DLCs from Don’t Starve Together. Webber was added to Cult of the Lamb with the 1.2.6 patch, so you first need to download that update to get them and Penitence mode.
To summon Webber in Cult of the Lamb, you must pick up a unique skull dropped from spider mobs. You can slay plenty of spiders at the base. If you kill enough of them, a skull will eventually spawn. Bury it in a grave, and Webber will rise and join your cult as a follower. Once Webber is in your cult, Penitence mode will be an option for you when you start a new game.
What Is Penitence Mode in Cult of the Lamb?
This new mode is based on the primary surviving mechanic from Don’t Starve Together. The mode mixes the roguelike action from Cult of the Lamb with Don’t Starve‘s survival gameplay.
You still need to go through areas and maps to fight enemies in a top-down perspective in Penitence mode, but the Lamb will now have a Hunger and Sleep bar. The Lamb must be fed and get enough sleep to make sure the bars don’t deplete. When the Hunger and Sleep bar gets too low, a mysterious timer will appear onscreen.
The Lamb will begin taking damage every time the mysterious timer counts down. When the Lamb dies, you will receive a permanent game over. You won’t be able to continue where you left off, and your saved progress will be lost.
