Ever since Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was unveiled at Nintendo’s E3 presentation, short trailers have popped up now and then to show different aspects of the game. Until now, the videos have been largely similar, detailing pieces of standard gameplay, such as the game world and the battle system. This latest reveal, however, focuses exclusively on the different job classes characters can acquire, called vocations, and teases some of their functions and how upgrading the classes will work.

Two interesting tidbits are announced in this trailer. First, Dragon Quest VII will offer over 30 vocations, more than any other game in the series. These include the basic staples like warriors, thieves, and mages, and advanced classes that require mastery of previous vocations. Second, the monster class allows characters to learn and keep spells and abilities used by the various enemies fought in the game. This vocation actually transforms the character into the monster itself, as opposed to taming them. Theoretically, the monster classes will likely make up the large number of available vocations, though the trailer did not specifically state this.

Dragon Quest VII follows after what is largely known as the Zenithian Trilogy, made up of Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI. However, this game does not require any knowledge of previous games in the series, as it stands alone with its own world and story. Fans and newcomers to the series won’t have to wait much longer for the experience, because the game is due to release on 3DS systems on September 16, 2016. The series that arguably started the entire JRPG genre isn’t widely known in the west, making this Dragon Quest VII reveal a wonderful surprise.
