Mortal Kombat 1 offers a variety of different characters, each with their own colorful personality and flashy moveset. For those who are new, though, picking one that suits a beginner can be a challenge, especially given all the new gameplay mechanics and changes from MK11. Thankfully, characters like Liu Kang are easy to master. But the Fire God is not the only good character that you can start MK1 with. Let’s run through the best characters for beginners in Mortal Kombat 1.

Best Mortal Kombat 1 Characters To Start With

  • Liu Kang
  • Kung Lao
  • Scorpion
  • Reptile
  • Johnny Cage
  • Geras

Among all the Mortal Kombat characters, there are a select few that deal the highest damage. But more importantly, you can learn and master these Kombatants much quicker than the other ones. Here’s why the mentioned list has the best characters for beginners to master in Mortal Kombat 1.

Liu Kang

Liu Kang is by far one of the best characters to master in Mortal Kombat 1. He has some of the easiest combos to learn and deals a ton of damage with each special move. The Fire God can shoot projectiles as low and high attacks while attacking your opponent himself with a flying kick afterward! The straightforward inputs for performing moves, easy combo starters, and the ability to fight any type of enemy is the reason that Liu Kang is among the best Mortal Kombat 1 characters for beginners and pros alike.

Kung Lao

The Shaolin never fails to grow strong warriors, and Kung Lao is no exception. The descendent of the Great Kung Lao is capable of doing a mixture of medium, low, and high attacks, while also being able to throw his sharp hat! Another important feature about Kung Lao is that he can do highly damaging aerial attacks; which is an improved feature of the Mortal Kombat 1 over MK11.

Scorpion

Scorpion is always one of the best characters in the Mortal Kombat series. And even though Hanzo Hasashi is not the main Scorpion of MK1‘s current timeline, Kuai Liang has proven to be a good replacement; at least for now. Scorpion has incredible special moves to be combined with the basic combo attacks. However, something that most of the players love about Scorpion, is his spear! You can grab your enemy mid-air to continue your combos and even teleport behind them to keep the combat at close range. You should also note that Scorpion’s teleportation move can be amplified for more combo input.

Reptile

Reptile is a combo master in Mortal Kombat 1. In fact, this is one of the best versions of Reptile that has ever set foot in the Mortal Kombat universe. In terms of story, Reptile’s story with his family is such a better narrative than being Shang Tsung’s servant for no reason. And in terms of gameplay, Reptile dominates the fight with his special moves. His most important tool is the force ball, which you can send toward the enemies at different speeds, keeping the enemy in the air for more combo input. And most importantly, Reptile can turn invisible!

Johnny Cage

If you’re a Johnny Cage player, then you should know that he is one of the best Mortal Kombat 1 characters for beginners and pros. Cage’s attacks deal a lot of damage, and most importantly, he has so many different combos to confuse your opponents. Overheads and low attacks are Johnny Cage’s bread and butter, and you can mix them with aerial attacks to vanquish the fight.

Geras

Geras is one of the returning characters from MK11, and he’s still as powerful as he was in the previous game. The most important aspect of Geras as a fighter is that his basic combo attacks are hard to block, and if you combine them with his special moves, you’ll be unstoppable. However, you should know that just like Liu Kang, Geras’ attacks deal a ton of damage, even if you perform simple combos.

And there you have it, if you’re new to Mortal Kombat 1, these characters are the best to begin with. Nonetheless, you would need to spend some time learning these fighters’ different moves, combos, and combinations with the Kameo fighters to dominate.
