Robert Kirkman has written his popular Invincible comic series for quite a long time. The first issue debuted in January 2003. It has since spanned 13 years with over 130 issues. However, Kirkman recently revealed that Invincible #144 will be the last hurrah for the critically acclaimed comic.

In a letter sent out to various news outlets, Kirkman explained his decision to fans. “The point of this series has always been to celebrate what we love about superhero comics, but always put our own spin on it,” Kirkman wrote. “To play with the tropes of the genre, but twist them into something new, at all times, no matter what… So then, it stands to reason, that if most superhero comics continue forever with no end in sight and over their runs do not, in any way, tell a cohesive story that holds together to form a singular narrative… shouldn’t INVINCIBLE do the exact opposite?”

Kirkman went on to say that he talked it over with long-time illustrator Ryan Ottley. He discovered they both were leaning toward ending the lengthy series. Ottley  has illustrated for the series since issue #8, and Kirkman states, “the idea of drawing something other than INVINCIBLE someday… and not being stuck in this monthly grind we’ve been in for well over a decade… appealed to him.” You can read Kirkman’s full letter here.

Invincible‘s story centers on Mark Grayson, a young superhero whose alien father passed down his unique traits.

So with both writer and illustrator having made up their minds, Invincible will officially begin winding down to its finale. Its last arc begins in issue #133, called the “End of All Things,” appropriately enough. Its release is in November of this year. Kirkman also announced that this final arc is 12 parts in length, ending on #144 – the final issue. Invincible #130, which is bringing back co-creator Cory Walker on art, will be released August 24.
