Assassin’s Creed Mirage is finally out and, after a positive initial reception from early reviews, the game has already been struck with controversy in the PC gaming community. This controversy comes in the form of Ubisoft adding Denuvo DRM in a day-one patch for Assassin’s Creed Mirage PC gamers.

The latest addition to the long-running Assassin’s Creed series has been receiving a lot of positive attention, with many reviewers calling it a formidable return to form in the lead-up to the game’s full launch. This has led to a lot of hype among fans of the series, both new and old, with PC and console gamers alike downloading the game as soon as possible after its official worldwide release. PC gamers faced an unexpected update, though, and droves of them are furious.

A day-one patch added Denuvo DRM to Assassin’s Creed Mirage. For the uninitiated, Denuvo is an anti-piracy program that has been present in a lot of Ubisoft’s recent PC titles. The issue many have with Denuvo is that it is notorious for negatively affecting PC performance. The most recent generation of video games has been marred by poorly optimized PC ports of the latest games popping up left and right. The fact that review copies of Assassin’s Creed Mirage seemed to be free of Denuvo led many gamers to be hopeful that Ubisoft had listened and would not be adding Denuvo to the game, but the day-one patch snuck it in, and angry posts have been popping up on platforms like Twitter and Reddit ever since.

How Denuvo’s presence affects the performance of Assassin’s Creed Mirage is inconclusive this close to the game’s launch. Early PC reviewers said the game could run with minimal performance issues on above-average PC hardware, but Denuvo being added could be a difficult extra strain. For console gamers, this isn’t a relevant issue and many are already enjoying the game on day one, but for those on PC, this news may lead many to reconsider their purchase.
