A smaller PlayStation 5 with a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive has been announced by Sony, and it is coming to the stores later this year. The disc drive will be available for anybody wanting to buy a digital edition of the console, who might also want to play physical games or other media. Both editions of the slim PS5 console will be available from November in the U.S., and it will roll out globally soon after.

Whatโ€™s Different With the Slim PS5

There are many subtle differences between the new slim version of the PS5. The first is the most obvious, as it is slightly smaller. The new PS5 measures up at 358 ร— 96 ร— 216 mm, while the first edition of the console is 390mm x 104mm x 260mm without the base. In addition to changes to the exterior, the interior will have a slightly souped-up SSD, with a 1TB instead of an 825GB SSD. This might be why the new digital edition might be more expensive, with it being $449.99, instead of the $399.99 it was at launch.

The plates that shield the console are also in four parts now instead of two. One can assume that any plates bought for the original versions of the console wonโ€™t be compatible with this new version, especially as the PlayStation Blog states that โ€œPS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024.โ€ This has also made an impact on the visual design of the console, arguably making it look worse. These slim models will be the only PS5 consoles being sold after the current stock runs out. So, if there are any plates you want, go now.

Surprisingly, it doesnโ€™t seem like youโ€™ll be able to stand the console up vertically without purchasing a stand, which is also compatible with the older models. Of course, if you havenโ€™t bought a PS5 already, a new slimmer model is the perfect thing for you to get this holiday season, especially if you want to play Marvelโ€™s Spider-Man 2.
