Interplay Entertainment, the studio behind a huge number of games, has announced that it plans to sell off its game asset library and intellectual properties. This includes approximately seventy different titles and dozens of characters. Interplay is responsible for games such as Clayfighter, Earthworm Jim, MDK, Battle Chess, and many other familiar titles.

Interplay has not released a hit game in quite some time, as most of their most memorable titles are from well over a decade ago. However, in a released statement, Interplay’s president Eric Caen had this to say:

“As game creators, we are proud of the entertainment these properties have provided over the years. With the proliferation of mobile, augmented reality, virtual reality and other new forms of consumption, we believe that consumers are ready to experience and interact with Interplay’s characters, stories and game play in ways never possible before. We look forward to seeing how this unique portfolio of interactive entertainment icons will evolve for the worldwide audience.”

The statement does not say whether they will be selling off everything individually or if it plans to lump everything together and sell it off as a group. Either way, there are a few very memorable games and characters up for grabs. Tell me you don’t want to see Earthworm Jim show up in Super Smash Bros.

Or maybe even Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.
Or maybe even Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.

Interplay may not have been up to much lately, but they have not been dormant. They made a failed run at a tabletop game based on the Freespace to gauge interest in a PC revival, and they also promised a remastering of their goofy Clayfighter series before the end of 2016. No word on whether Blue Suede Goo and Bad Mister Frosty are still going to see the light of day before the end of the year.

Any specific companies you want to see wind up with Interplay’s intellectual properties and gaming library? Let us know in the comments below.
