The mastermind and key figure behind the entire Super Smash Bros. series recently made a video giving some thoughts on whether there will be a new game at some point in the future. The most recent franchise entry, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, got its final content updates in 2021. With the Nintendo Switch successor seemingly around the corner, many fans are wondering if a new Super Smash Bros. title will be coming along with it.

Will There Ever Be A New Super Smash Bros. Sequel?

Sakurai gave his thoughts on the future of the Super Smash Bros. series in a video made for his YouTube channel that covers a lot regarding game development. He discusses the topic using specific stories from his own experience developing games, and a video uploaded on October 30th speaks about Sakurai’s experience with the most recent game in his career, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Speaking on whether or not there will ever be a follow-up to the popular Switch fighting game, Sakurai says, “As for what comes next in the Smash Bros. series, even I’m not sure. I feel like we truly succeeded in making people happy with this game, but now that Smash Bros. has grown to be monstrous in size, I’d say it’s difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again. Every time, we managed to make a game I had previously thought impossible, so I can’t say for certain that there won’t be another, but I do think it would be difficult to push it any further than we have.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was considered a system-seller title for the Nintendo Switch when the game was first released back in 2018. It’s still one of the best-selling Switch games of all time, with over 30 million units sold worldwide. It has proven itself among the community to be probably the most popular and well-received game other than Super Smash Bros. Melee.

It sounds like Super Smash Bros. fans should never say never.
