Finding worms in your garden is one thing. A weird old mask is another. The Masks quest starts when you randomly find (you guessed it) a mask while tilling your garden. The game will then prompt you to go talk to Jina in the hopes she might help. Kilima Village’s resident archeologist cares about the pursuit of truth as much as Subira, and your discovery is just the thing she needs. One mask isn’t enough to finish this quest, however. You’ll need several more to do that, and the game is less than helpful about pointing the way. Here’s how to complete the Masks quest in Palia.
How To Start Masks Quest
(Updated on March 27th, 2024 – clarified quest steps and updated images)
Jina’s a romance option, but you’ll need to put your heart aside if you want to complete Masks. If you haven’t already stumbled upon the Bird Mask in your garden, just till soil until you find it. Then bring the mask to Jina to get the quest started. Jina thinks the Bird Mask was used in religious rituals during the Human Era, but she needs more masks to support her hypothesis.
Unlike with the Twin Waves Riddle, the game provides zero hints about where the other masks can be found. It’s also worth noting that each time you find a mask, you need to return to Jina to discuss your discovery. Here’s where you can find the rest of these ancient relics:
- Bird Mask – Discovered while tilling soil
- Lizard Mask – Ruins to the northwest of Remembrance Garden, near where Sifuu stands in the morning
- Insect Mask – Ruins west of the Whispering Banks fast travel point and north of Fisherman’s Lagoon
- Kitsuu Mask – Under a tree on the east side of Mirror Pond Ruins
- Humanoid Mask – Near the blocked passage inside the Water Temple at Phoenix Falls. Descend the stairs toward the headless statue but turn around instead of crossing the water. The mask is to the right of the stairs.
Ending the Quest
After finding the last mask, return to Jina. She’ll send you out once more to put the pieces together. This time you’ll need to go to the Ancient Library west of Mirror Pond Ruins. Once inside, turn right twice to arrive at a room full of books. Turn right at the two flights of stairs and you’ll find a book on a shelf by the stairs. Interact with the book before returning to Jina one last time. You’ll receive Ancient Pottery for completing the Masks quest and helping Jina make a little more sense of the world in Palia. Call it your good deed for the day.
