After years of anticipation and watching the many colorful characters jump around the whimsy-filled levels, of Cuphead it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to jump into the beautifully stylized platformer.
The game has been on display at Microsoft’s E3 shows since 2014. With those showings also came multiple release dates. The latest one has been pushed back once again in favor of 2017, though no specific date was given.
Studio MDHR released a statement about the delay, stating that releasing the title in 2016 would have limited its scope. Moving into next year gives the team more time to fully realize their vision.
Cuphead is a 2D platformer with an art style reminiscent of 1920s cartoons. The characters sport long, thin limbs and white gloves; their pupils popping out of their disk-like eyes. The game stars Cuphead, a teacup with arms and legs that shoots balls of energy out of its hand when it makes a finger gun. Players will guide the devious cup through themed levels, each offering up their own unique blend of platforming and shoot ’em up action.
The highlight of the game is certainly its boss fights. These animated monstrosities fill the screen, sending waves of projectiles whipping across the screen. Fighting against devious foes like a giant carrot or coco clock come to life feels perfectly natural for the world and looks great at the same time.
Regardless of how much longer we have to wait, Cuphead is shaping up to be a fantastic platformer, introducing us to an adorably dark world unlike anything we’ve seen before. Co-op gameplay is also a big feature, letting two players leap and shoot their way through levels together, trying to defeat the hulking bosses.
