Amnesia: The Dark Descent
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information.

Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent was first released in 2010 and it has become one of the most critically acclaimed games in the survival horror genre. Just one search for the title in YouTube brings up countless “Let’s Play” videos of gamers screaming in fear while their viewers undoubtedly hold a cautious hand over their eyes as they try to brave the dark halls of Brennenburg Castle.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent was originally released for the PC, but this November, PlayStation 4 users are about to see what all the hype is about when this horror classic finally hits the PlayStation store for the very first time. The Dark Descent is not coming to the PS4 all by itself, though. It will be joined by its expansion, Amnesia: Justine (2011) and the sequel Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (2013) as well.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Brennenburg Castle is a hallway of nightmares.

The Dark Descent is a first person survival horror game that follows a man named Daniel, who wakes up in the halls of Brennenburg Castle in Prussia with no memory. As Daniel, the player must descend into the depths of the castle, “explore eerie pathways”, and live Daniel’s buried memories as they slowly come to light. The unique thing about Amnesia is that it changes the way you perceive the horror genre, because of its full and completely immersive experience without cutscenes. The player is in control from the beginning until the very end. The objective of the game is not to kill enemies, but to simply make your way through a dark, unnerving castle while trying to avoid enemies and ultimately survive.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent was released a year after Resident Evil 5 (a good game, though arguably one that took the franchise away from its survival horror roots). Since then, Amnesia has not only attempted to sustain the survival horror genre, but it has also inspired other first-person survival horror games like Outlast, titles that really commit put horror into the homes of gamers.

Amnesia: Collection (The Dark Descent, Justine, and A Machine for Pigs) will be available in the PlayStation Store on November 22.
