Smite is in an odd place in the MOBA realm – it definitely does not have the base of the big dogsย Dota 2,ย Heroes of the Storm,ย andย League of Legends, but it does have a strong fan base and seems very content with its place in the pecking order. The different view may have something to do with it, or maybe the unique cultural gods are what bring people to the game. Developer Hi-Rez Studios is hoping that fan base carries over to their newest venture into the realms of the gods:ย Smite Tactics.
Smite Tactics is a 1-on-1 turn-based tactics game pitting the gods and their minions against one another in grid-based combat. It appears as if eachย god will serve as a sort of “hero” character, while the bulk of each force will be made up of that god’s specific minions.
Armies will be constructed by putting together decks of collectible cards (because of course it will).ย Smite Tactics looks an awful lot likeย Duelyst, but set in the strange mishmash world ofย Smite.
For those unfamiliar with the source material,ย Smite is a lane-pushing MOBA. However, it features aย differentย perspective in that the camera is situated like a third person shooter. This can make battles more intense and provide a unique opportunity for skill shots than the overhead view of a game likeย Dota 2.ย Smite‘s characters are a variety of deities pulled from different cultures: Norse, Greek, Hindu, Japanese, and many more.
The beta forย Smite Tactics is expected to be out by the end of the year. Players can sign up for the beta here. We quite liked the originalย Smite, in a big part due to its unique take on mythological figures. Hopefully, that style can transition well toย Smite Tactics. Check out the reveal trailer below:
