Nintendo has officially announced the release date and price for their upcoming iOS Super Mario game. Super Mario Run will be available starting Dec 15. at the price of $9.99 for the entirety of the purchase.
The game was on revealed on Sept. 17, at Apple Inc.’s annual iPhone event by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. Run will be the first Mario game released on Mobile phones, and will be Nintendo’s second.
It’s no doubt that Super Mario Run is a result of the success of Nintendo’s first venture into the mobile phone market, Pokemon Go. In it’s first week, Go shattered app records and was the talk of the town, with children, parents, and grandparents alike capturing virtual pokemon.
Despite the fact that Nintendo already has a mobile platform in the DS franchise and even more recently unveiled the mobile capabilities of their next console (Nintendo Switch), the company continues to create mobile games for phone. It’s obvious that the goal in mind is for Super Mario Run to turn as big a profit for the company as Pokemon Go.
Like previous games in the franchise, the objective is to have Mario reach the end of the level as quickly as possible, while simultaneously collecting coins and avoiding obstacles (enemies, gaps, spikes ect.). The twist involved in Super Mario Run is that the player doesn’t control Mario’s speed or direction, as the plumber is in a constant sprint.
Instead, players will tap the screen to dictate when Mario jumps and how high depending on how long the screen is pushed. The tapping, side scrolling concept is reminiscent of mobile game icon flappy bird, with the exception that taping is less of a constant.
The introduction trailer revealed the game will feature a multitude of classic Mario maps, as well three different game modes. Alongside single player, Toad Rally allows users to compete against each other for coins, while the final mode uses previously earned coins to let players create their own courses.
Super Mario Run will be launching simultaneously in 151 different countries and will support multiple languages such as English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Traditional Chinese. It will be exclusive to Apple users only. Nintendo says that it will release the game on Android in 2017.
