Anno 1800 is the best Anno game yet, though, like its predecessors, it also continues the tradition of steep learning curves in this RTS/production simulation game. Even something such as settling on a new island can be intimidating for new players. So, for those struggling with the basics of the game, here’s our Anno 1800 guide on settling on a new island.

Such hurried decisions can make your gameplay more difficult, especially if you pick without consideration.

Here are some steps with the logistics and foresight as a consideration. Anno 1800 is a game about economics, after all.

Step 1: Search for the ‘Perfect’ Island

Just about any island you see won’t do. Remember that each island only has a handful of natural resources (or maybe more in some rare cases). These resources can determine how independent and self-sufficient that island can be.

Some natural goods to consider for islands are as follows:

  • Potato – A basic resource for making a lot of stuff that laborers want, such as Schnapps.
  • Grain – Grain is also essential for Beer and Bread if you want the island to sustain a mid-tier population.
  • Hops – Another requirement for Beer.
  • Iron – A resource that dictates how well your settlements can advance.

If the island has all those, then it’s golden. All the other higher-tier goods can come from other islands once you have a surplus of these goods above and can offload them to other settlements.

Step 2: Make Sure You Have the Following Goods

In order to settle on a new island in Anno 1800, the said ship that would be doing the hauling also would need to be loaded with the goods that would be used for constructing the Small Trading Post.

The Trading Post is the building that will mark your claim on an island. The Trading Post also needs the following goods in the cargo of a ship so they can be built:

  • 10 Timber
  • 8 Steel Beams
  • 2500 Credits

Timber is easy, but Steel Beams might be a chore to produce. You can always just buy some from the A.I. traders if you have no means of producing it.

Step 3: Load Up the Timber & Steel Beams on Your Ship & Off to the Island

Once you have the available resources, bring your ship to your Trading Post on your main island. Then, load up the 10 Timber and 8 Steel Beams on the ship. Afterward, bring that loaded ship to your target island.

You’ll need to pick a spacious and accessible spot on the beach or coastline to construct the Trading Post, so move your ship around if you don’t see the build outline. Once you have constructed the Small Trading Post, you can build a road and a settlement connected to it. Well done, now you’ve learned how to colonize in Anno 1800.
