While we eagerly await the release of The Last Guardian next month, PlayStation Japan has released nine minutes of gameplay footage to hold us over. The gameplay is charming, adorable, and looks super promising.

The newest look at The Last Guardian begins with the young boy assisting a chained and injured Trico. I think it is safe to assume that this is the beginning of the relationship for the boy and creature. The footage also features some mesmerizing landscapes, the first glimpse at some potential “baddies”, how the game will operate, and some moments between the boy and dog-cat-bird hybrid creature that will make you go, “Aww!”.

The game focuses on a young boy waking in a ruin after being kidnapped. Upon waking, he discovers Trico and they must work together to solve puzzles, avoid enemies, and find their way back to civilization. The Last Guardian is the spiritual successor of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, all of which are created by Japanese game designer, Fumito Ueda. So gamers can expect a minimalist approach with plenty of puzzles!

Fans of Ueda’s games have been holding their breath in anticipation hoping that we will actually get the game next month. The Last Guardian followed suit with almost every major game release this year by delaying its release from October to December. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the game was announced at the E3 Sony conference in 2009 for the PS3. Yeah, it’s been that long. After some back and forth on the development front, the team decided to make the game for Sony’s PlayStation 4, and after about 10 years, we should be finally getting the title.

The Last Guardian is set to release on December 6th, 2016. Here’s to hoping that the game is worth the ten years we have all been waiting, but I am remaining hopeful.
