Marvel comics is bringing back Man-Thing and they needed a writer. As a result, they’ve tapped an author who knows how to frighten young readers. R.L Stine is their choice and, you have to admit, it makes a lot of sense.

R.L Stine is probably a name that most kids of the last twenty years will know. Mr. Stine is an author who is most noteworthy for his Goosebumps series. The Goosebumps books have terrified kids who love horror while being too young for Stephen King. A TV series was adapted from the books and even had a movie starring Jack Black made recently.

We don’t like to talk about the movie.

According to the New York Times, Mr Stine is rather excited to write a comic book.

“For Mr. Stine, 73, writing the five-issue series is something of a lifelong dream. “My first ambition was to be a comic book artist,” he said. “I started doing these little comic books in the fourth grade: ‘Super Stooge,’ the dumbest hero on earth.”

Man-Thing, meanwhile, was created by Marvel back in the 1970’s. The new series is inspired by the 1950’s horror comics Tales from the Crypt, a series Mr. Stine was a huge fan of. Man-Thing, therefore, was the obvious choice when Marvel approached him to write for them. In fact, according the man himself (via the New York Times);

“They were scary, really gruesome, bloody comics and they always had a twist ending,” he said. “I think they’ve been a major influence in everything I’ve done since,”

The artwork, meanwhile, will be handled by German Peralta and Daniel Johnson. Each issue will also include a short horror story written by R.L Stine and illustrated by a guest artist.
