Kevin Eastman, known for bringing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to life, has found a home for his next project. The TMNT creator’s crowdfunded Drawing Blood series is heading to Image Comics for publishing. The 12-issue series finds Eastman teaming up with writer David Avallone and artists Ben Bishop and Troy Little. Initially launched on Kickstarter, Eastman hopes the Image Comics can help bring the project to a larger audience.
Life Imitates Art
Kevin Eastman describes Drawing Blood as part autobiographical and part tall tales and legends. The creator wanted to craft a fictional character to put through the wringer. Writer David Avallone agreed with this sentiment. In fact, when he heard the pitch for the series, Avallone knew it hadn’t been done before in comics. Not to mention that it had the potential to be something amazing. So, naturally, he had to be a part of the team. As co-creator for Drawing Blood, Avallone has had a blast crafting such a funny, entertaining, and heartbreaking saga of redemption.
Meanwhile, artist Ben Bishop claims that the series is unlike anything else out now. It offers a glimpse into the world of making comics. Plus, it shows people what life can be like after helping to create one of the world’s biggest franchises. Drawing Blood follows the journey of Shane Bookman. Bookman is a cartoonist whose life has become crazier than any comic. After creating a billion-dollar global franchise, Bookman is struggling to recover from success so early in his career. He hopes to find that same spark of creation for something new.
Kevin Eastman And The Turtles
Of course, Drawing Blood’s protagonist sounds an awful lot like Eastman himself. The creator is likely best known for co-creating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He worked with Peter Laird to bring the billion-dollar franchise to life. Since then, Eastman has remained involved with the franchise. He is even a part of the current run of TMNT comics. Which is heading for a big relaunch under IDW Publishing, with Jason Aaron set to write a new series.
Drawing Blood #1 is set to release on 04/24.
