The latest trailer for Steam Greenlight game OMORI was released on creator OMOCAT’s youtube account on the first day of the new year. The project is an upcoming surreal psychological horror game, made with RPGmaker.

Stylized both graphically and gameplay wise almost identically to other Japanese games in the genre, this JRPG has a familiar look. But that is where the comparisons between OMORI and many other games in the genre come to an end.

The trailer reveals that behind the cute and cozy, pixelated layers of the JRPG lies a horror game. Omori must travel between two worlds, making trusted allies and fearsome enemies, with the hopes of unravelling the secrets of each and choosing which world he believes is real.

The game’s Kickstarter reveals that OMORI – who the creator describes character wise as being “depressed otaku” – started off as a character who lived on a blog, which lasted from December 2011 until March 2012. In 2012, OMOCAT completed a group of short stories revolved around OMORI and his neighbors.

Uh…good demon dog, don’t eat us.

Later that year, OMOCAT completed OMORI’S SKETCHBOOK, an experimental picture book featuring creation of the characters. Soon after – including the creation of the first chapter of an OMORI graphic novel – she began working with freelance illustrator Jami Carignan and indie game designer Archeia with the hopes of turning her idea into a game.

After successfully being Kickstarted on June 5th, 2014, the dream became a reality, after the project managed to surpass its original goal of $22,000, earning a whopping $200,000. As a result of the extra funding, the game will feature more gameplay cutscenes and will be coming to more than just PC.

OMORI will be released on PC, MAC, and the 3DS, but is still in development, with no concrete release date set. Stay tuned to the site for more updates and be sure to check out the trailer above!
