Ayo Edebini Delivers Heartfelt Apology on SNL After Calling Jennifer Lopez’s Career a Scam

Right before the duo hosted Saturday Night Live on Feb 3, a video made the rounds on social media of Ayo Edebini casually calling Jennifer Lopez’s career a scam. However, Lopez has since communicated that Edebini has sincerely apologized for her past transgressions.

On the SNL set, The Bear actress was the host, whereas the “I’m Real” singer featured as the special musical guest. As OK! Magazine reports, Edebini approached Lopez in her dressing room to deliver a formal, heartfelt apology. It must have went down swimmingly, since J. Lo hasn’t passed any further comment on the matter.

“She was mortified and very sweet. She came to my dressing room and apologized with tears in her eyes, saying how terrible it was that she had said those things. She felt really badly and loved my performance because we had just done my soundcheck and she actually got to hear me perform. She was just like, ‘I’m so f—— sorry, it was so awful of me.”

But Edebini wouldn’t be the first one to trash-talk Lopez’s career. In fact, there seems to be a line out the door of celebrities who can’t stand J. Lo, including “All I Want For Christmas Is You” songstress Mariah Carey, “Starships” superstar Nicki Minaj, and RiRi herself, Rihanna.

It was in a 2020 episode of the “Scam Goddess” podcast that Edebini boldly disclosed her controversial opinion regarding Lopez’s career.

“Today I was actually thinking about one of my favorite scams of all time because J.Lo is performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Her whole career is one long scam. Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her. I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs… A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio.’ Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”

During the SNL episode, Ayo Edebini criticized her own mistakes. “It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast, and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid.”

She has since stated that she plans to be a lot more “thoughtful” about “what [she] posts online.”

Despite the hate she has received from fellow celebrities and the general public alike, Lopez took a stand in 2001 when she snagged the lead role in The Wedding Planner. Her role as Mary Fire was initially reserved for a white actress, so she not only defied expectations but also made history.

Due to the resounding success of the movie, Jennifer became the first actress ever to simultaneously have both a number one movie and a number one album in the same week. These being The Wedding Planner and J. Lo, respectively.

As we await J. Lo’s ninth album — This Is Me…Now — it becomes abundantly clear that sticks and stones will break her bones, but words will never hurt one of Latin pop’s biggest icons. The haters will hate, but she’ll be paying bills.

Not to mention her upcoming acting roles as the protagonist of sci-fi thriller Atlas and the on-screen wife of wrestler Anthony Robles, played by Jharrel Jerome, in Unstoppable.
