We’ve done trilogies. We’ve done tutorials. We’ve done races. We’ve done TAS runs. Heck, we even did a whacked out Pikmin 3 challenge run. Bet you thought we couldn’t find anything else crazier than all that, didn’t you? But you were wrong. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a speedrun race between Shenmue and Shenmue 2 at the same time, by the same person. Yup, puri_puri plays both games at once to see which one he can complete faster. He currently holds first place for running the first game, and second place for the second. Ironic, no?

Shenmue 1 is played on any%, which takes around eight hours with glitches, close to ten without. Shenmue 2 is played on a regular new game, glitchless, which also takes around eight hours. A NG+ with glitches cuts the time drastically to around two hours, hence the choice for the longer route. Interesting to note, the leaderboards at speedrun.com show the new game glitchless category for S2 as being empty. As for the race itself, S1 gets going quite a bit sooner since the opening scenes are skippable.

There’s another version of the race with different commentary, though both versions do a fine job of explaining things despite attention being divided between both games. As the videos are eight hours long, only the first one is shown here. The other is laid out a bit cleaner and only has one timer for both games, rather than tracking each one individually. It can be viewed here. The final time for S1 is 8:18:18.73, and the second game’s time is 8:25:59.11, around seven minutes longer.

Just in case you haven’t heard, Shenmue 3 reached its Kickstarter goal and plans to release December 2017 for PS4 and PC. And if you need to catch up with Speedrun Fast, click here to face your Doom.
