“Oh my goodness gracious!” “Stop doing that!” “No, don’t die!” If you’ve ever played Battleblock Theater, surely you have a favorite quote from the witty and sarcastic narrator. A live audience and equally sarcastic comments from watchers could only improve the experience, and that’s exactly what we got from AGDQ 2015 when PJ and Mecha Richter teamed up to 100% the game. PJ and Richter also hold the world record for the 100% co-op category in Battleblock Theater. The record time is two and a half hours as of about one year ago. The two hour and forty-five minute AGDQ run is rife with jokes from all sides, so sit back and prepare to be entertained.

Battleblock Theater demands skill, timing, and anger management to get through. PJ and Richter do a fantastic job of using their cooperative play to full advantage, with one sacrificing himself so the other can use him as a stepping stone in several instances. The precision with which they pull off their teamwork is truly amazing, doubly so when you realize they never have to verbally divvy up roles during gameplay.

With so much going on in every level of Battleblock Theater, it’s hard to tell mistakes from strategies. The eye has a tendency to simply follow the lead player, but the one trailing behind has the task of picking up collectibles skipped over by the front player. It may seem like he just ends up waiting for the next checkpoint to open before self-destructing most of the time, but his job is just as demanding as the leader’s. After all, he must keep track of the other’s progress and identify which support actions he needs to take, and he has to do so within a split-second.
