Last Epoch: The Best Classes (& Masteries) for Leveling & Beginners

When in doubt, spin-to-win.

  • Marksman (Rogue)
  • Sorcerer (Mage)

The real fun begins in Last Epoch once you have access to the Mastery Classes or the subclasses. Each base class has three subclasses which you can’t change once you’ve chosen. So it pays to be wise with your decisions here. If you’re a newcomer to the game, you’ll certainly want a Mastery Class which won’t alienate you with its complexity and something you can still take to the endgame. For that matter, here are the best classes in Last Epoch for beginners.

They’re easy to play (relatively) and won’t have you pressing too many buttons. Gearing them is also straightforward.

Paladin (Sentinel)

What makes the Paladin recommended for newbies is how it covers most of the bases you need for the endgame. This Mastery Class gives players lots of defensive and offensive nodes, but more importantly, you get lots of passive nodes that give out Elemental Resistances.

If you’ve played any kind of isometric ARPG before, you’ll know that capping out Fire, Cold, and Lightning Resistances is mandatory before stepping into the late game. Paladin might feel a little too limited since you’re compelled to focus on Fire and Lightning damage, but there are Physical damage options as well.

Forge Guard (Sentinel)

Forge Guard is even tankier than Paladin since it’s the Sentinel’s minion sub-class. There’s a segment in the Forge Guard’s passive tree that lets you focus on summoning Forged Weapons or weapon minions that do half your work.

If you pair it with its inherently high armor and blocking nodes, you get a summoner tank class that’s obscenely resilient. However, your damage might plateau later on. Nothing to worry about since you’ll still outlive enemies, but you might envy the other subclasses.

Void Knight (Sentinel)

Basically, just about all Sentinel Mastery Classes are beginner-friendly. Void Knight is the most complex Paladin subclass, however, but we still recommend it for newbies since the best Void Knight build right now is Void Warpath. Warpath is Last Epoch‘s Whirlwind or spin-to-win skill.

It’s a chill way to play the game. Just hold down one button for most of the combat. Void Knight is considerably less tanky than the Paladin or Forge Guard but it makes up for that with Life Leech and higher damage.

Necromancer (Acolyte)

We mentioned that minion subclasses are the most relaxed in Last Epoch and the Necromancer takes the cake when it comes to minion gameplay. Actually, it’s less gameplay and more like watching your corpse corps clear the path for you.

It’s that easy. You will still need to keep watch for some heavy area attacks and there are some difficulty modifiers that will have enemies targeting you instead of the minions. But overall, the Necromancer is friendly for those with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Shaman (Primalist)

This one’s even more “sedentary” as a minion subclass. The Shaman and its notoriously simple totems can trivialize leveling and early-game combat. All you have to do is focus on totems and lay them down like turrets.

Since totems don’t move and don’t have to worry about pathfinding, they can be even more reliable than the Necromancer’s awkward skeletons. For added ease, make sure to specialize your Shamans for Thorn Totems. It will do most of the work for you, as long as you keep it alive.

Beastmaster (Primalist)

Beastmaster is also a minion subclass for the Primalist and like other minion or summoner subclasses, you just walk around the map like a violent Snow White, letting your critters chant calamitous choruses to clear the competition.

The difference is that you can get attached to your minions since they’re animals. Just make sure to focus on pets and pump up their nodes in the skill trees. Pretty soon, you’ll be unleashing the whole angry zoo.

Marksman (Rogue)

Our vote goes to the Marksman subclass if you want to go the Rogue route. Bladedancer is cool but a bit too risky while Falconer is more complex compared to other summoners. Marksman, however, is easy. You shoot your arrows and don’t let anything come near.

You can still take advantage of the Smoke Bombs and the Dodge stat while keeping yourself far away from danger. And with the Rogue handling multiple damage types well, you’re given plenty of options for your murder tools.

Sorcerer (Mage)

Spellcaster classes are no doubt more intricate compared to the usual melee class. But if you want something that’s still manageable for a clueless beginner, then the Sorcerer subclass from the Mage base class is pretty straightforward among the best classes in Last Epoch.

You mostly have to focus on your Elemental Damage output and it goes without saying, that you’re not supposed to be a tank. You’ll usually be at the mercy of Wards since you have lower armor or Health. But as they say, the best defense is a good meteor to your enemy’s face.
