This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Combat in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been simplified to what I think is the best for more fast-paced players like myself. You’re able to seamlessly switch between your party members as well as choose spells and abilities in a flash. Mastering combat in the game is the only thing that might be a little trickier than learning all the things you’re able to do.

There are a few things you need to understand about combat in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Firstly, you are able to go into the Combat Settings of the game’s menu to access all of your party member’s combat abilities.

Switching Between Party Members

When in battle, you can switch between your party members by pressing either up or down on the D-Pad. This is if you’re looking to fight with them alongside being able to use their spells and abilities. If you want to be able to use an ally’s abilities or spells without swapping, then press down on either R2 or L2 to switch into an ally’s combat menu.

You can also press the X button to get to the combat menu. Here, press the L2 or R2 buttons to switch between party members. You’ll be able to use their Limit Breaks, Synergy Abilities, and more without having to actually switch to them.

Shortcuts

Press L1 on your controller to access your shortcuts. These are abilities that you can perform once your ATB gauge is at certain levels. You’ll know which abilities you can use just by looking and seeing which ones are highlighted. As explained above, you can customize your abilities using this shortcut in the Combat Settings. The shortcuts are different depending on whether you’re in the air or on the ground.

Synergy Skills

Press R1 to access your party’s synergy skills. These are the different abilities that you can execute with your allies. These can be changed depending on who is in your party as well as which input you’ve decided on. Type A consists of offensive skills, while Type B consists of defensive ones. You can also take a look at these in the Combat Settings.

Synergy Abilities

Synergy skills are obtained by upgrading the party’s folios. Whenever you enter a major city like Costa Del Sol or even Nibelheim, you’ll be able to find a Maghnata Automat or Maghnata Books store. Here, you can upgrade your party’s Folio levels according to how much SP they have as well as what level your party is at. There are a variety of different abilities that you can perform with other party members, and each has their own advantages.

There comes a point in battle where you will be able to use these abilities. Press R2 to open your combat menu to see which ones you can use as you raise up your ATB gauge.

Summons

Like in the original game, you will be able to summon different Summons. You’re immediately given the Chocobo and Moogle for Cloud, Shiva for Aerith, and Ifrit for Red. You can earn more Summons by finding all of the Divine Intel locations across each region. There are three, and finding just one allows you to fight that Summon in Chadley’s Combat Simulator.

However, if you find all three, the Summon will be significantly weakened in the simulator, making it easier to defeat. Once defeated, you’ll have that specific Summon added to your Materia arsenal.
