Suicide Squad was definitely a main topic of conversation during 2016. Obviously, the film was highly anticipated and made over $745 million during its run in the box office. Despite its financial success, the film came under some pretty serious critiques from critics and fans. Recently, David Ayer, the film’s director, released a statement saying that he wished the film had been different as well.

In an unexpected turn of events, Ayer was inspired to write up the statement after a fan wrote an encouraging tweet about how great Suicide Squad was. The director recognized how controversial the film was and how he was excited about the film introducing some really great, lesser known characters. Like most fans, Ayer’s biggest complaint had to do with the Joker.

Wish I had a time machine. I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it … I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time. Real talk. (And no, there isn’t a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.)

Apparently, the film was originally supposed to have a lot more of Leto’s Joker but most of the scenes were cut from the final film. (It seems like all of his crazy antics and pranks on set were all for nothing.) Even the extended cut of the film released but still lacks everyone’s favorite green-haired villain. “Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat, and tears ripped to shreds. The hate game is strong out there,” said Ayer about the critiques.

However, Suicide Squad did gain an Oscar nomination and it was a unique film in a sea of superhero flicks. What are your thoughts on the film and on Ayer’s regrets? Let us know in the comments below!
