Although choosing the right vehicle is important, having the right tools on board can make even more of a difference. Unlike in Mario Kart, you won’t just be scooping up equipable items as you drive. In Expeditions, every mission begins with a pre-planning phase in which you’ll need to strike a balance between your budget, cargo space, and the needs of the trip. Finding the right combination of tools is tough, but few things feel as satisfying as getting it right and seeing a tough job come together in Saber Interactive‘s open world. Here are the best tools in Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.

5. Spare Wheel

Every driver knows the importance of having a spare wheel on board. As awful as it feels to blow a tire on a busy highway, it turns out it’s way worse when you’re alone in a swamp. Other than flipping your truck, nothing will stop your expedition as suddenly as a blown tire. Considering the rocks, roots, and other rough terrain you’ll cross, you’d expect to pop wheels all the time in this game, but it’s uncommon. For that reason, the spare wheel is niche equipment in Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, although it still ranks amongst the best tools in the right circumstances.

4. Spare Parts

No matter how carefully you drive, your vehicle will probably take some dings and dents. If you’re lucky it’ll just be some paint scraped off by a passing tree. If you’re unlucky it’ll be a trashed engine. Spare parts allow you to perform on-the-go repairs, keeping your truck rolling despite the beating you’ve given it. If you’re daring (or careless) and prone to driving off cliffs or into rivers a bit too deep to ford, you’ll grow to appreciate the ability to patch things up. You’re less likely to fail a mission due to accumulated damage than other causes, but spare parts are nonetheless handy.

3. Fuel

Knowing each vehicle’s fuel consumption stat is key. The difference between a B- and an A+ can bring you and your cargo to a halt, and gas goes quickly when you deflate your tires for some mountain climbing. Since you won’t always be able to bring a lightweight scout, sometimes bringing a hefty off-roader with cargo space for extra fuel is the next best thing. A spare gas can isn’t flashy like drones and pro camera equipment, but you’ll be glad you brought it when your truck starts to sputter and cough.

2. Jack-Screw

Off-roading appeals to daredevils and masochists alike, and getting yourself into bad situations is part of the job. With a heavy truck, heavy cargo, and enough momentum, even small rocks and ridges can cause your ride to flip. When that happens, you better hope you have a Jack-Screw on board. If you do you can instantly set your vehicle upright again and resume the expedition. If you don’t, you’re headed back to base camp to try again. For the time saved and the anxiety avoided, the Jack-Screw is without question of the best tools in Expeditions: A MudRunner Game.

1. Anchor

Like the Jack-Screw, the Anchor can reset your truck if it’s gotten hopelessly stuck. Unlike the Jack-Screw, your truck doesn’t need to be fully on its roof or side to use this tool. If you have Anchors on board you can deploy one at any time, as long as there’s a rock-free spot available to set it. You can then hitch your winch to it and haul your DON 71 free of whatever water, mud, or crevice has you down. Certain missions in Expeditions are brutal without a set of Anchors on board, and for their versatility and dependability, they’re hard to beat.

Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
