It’s alive…or it will be in Skybound’s upcoming Frankenstein series. The publisher has announced the next installment in its Universal Monsters line will focus on the titular doctor and his hulking creation. The four-issue series will follow a similar format to the previous entries in the line, Dracula and Creature From the Black Lagoon. It will be an updated re-telling of one of the most iconic monster movies ever released.
Frankenstein
Frankenstein writer and artist Michael Walsh announced the project on his X (formerly Twitter). He believes that fans of Frankenstein, new and old, will love this series. After all, the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his misunderstood creation is so iconic in the realm of horror. Plus, Walsh has used the original 1931 Universal Pictures film for inspiration in his own work for years. So, to play in that world and within the Universal Monsters line is a dream come true for the creator.
According to Skybound, Frankenstein will follow Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he embarks on a mission to create life from death. As the good doctor robs the grave of a police officer, he unfortunately runs into the son of that officer, still grieving. For Walsh, the trick with this story was finding a balance. One that stayed true to the lore of the original but allowed for the creation of something new. Though it sounds like the daunting task has proven successful. Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound, shared that Walsh’s work seamlessly brings new perspectives to the classic tale. This allows for a wonderful adaptation that retells the original but with new life.
Monster Mash
Frankenstein is the third entry in the licensing deal between Skybound and Universal. The four-issue Dracula series just wrapped up earlier this year. Next on the list is an updated version of Creature From the Black Lagoon. It is expected to hit stores this summer. Now, fans can look forward to Frankenstein, which debuts on 08/2
