In a move that’s divided the internet, Olivia Rodrigo decided to distribute free Plan B pills and contraceptives at the St. Louis show of her Guts world tour.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that the “Vampire” singer passed out free morning-after pills from Julie, as well as condoms and stickers from the Missouri Abortion Fund.
Rodrigo’s Decision Comes After Roe v. Wade Overturn
Julie is a nonprescription emergency-contraception product that launched back in September 2022 after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973 that protected the right for women to have an abortion. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and took away the right for a woman to have a guaranteed abortion. The decision is now subjective to many factors and varies between states.
The Missouri Abortion Fund supports people needing reproductive health services, primarily by providing financial assistance for Missouri residents who cannot afford the full cost of abortion care.
A spokesperson for Julie told The Guardian: “Replacing the stigma and shame often associated with emergency contraception with access, exploration, and education is core to who we are.”
“We’re thankful for artists like Olivia Rodrigo and initiatives like the Missouri Abortion Fund who share our mission,” they said.
Adding to Rodrigo’s Controversial Decisions
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Missouri has enforced a ban to prohibit abortion almost entirely, except in medical emergencies. Some Republican lawmakers in Missouri have even tried to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive healthcare such as birth control and STD testing.
As part of her Guts world tour, Rodrigo’s launched the Fund 4 Good initiative, which will distribute a portion of all ticket sales to abortion healthcare facilities.
This bold decision, along with Rodrigo’s recent visit to Walt Disney World, has left a sour taste in the mouths of fans. They are asking Rodrigo to boycott Disney Parks in solidarity with Palestine and disapprove of her deterring young girls from early pregnancy.
