Celine Dion might not be staying away from the stage for too long. In 2022, the legendary singer was diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome, which caused her to withdraw from the spotlight. As a result, she canceled all 2023 and 2024 dates for her Courage World tour. The last time the world saw the Canadian singer on stage was in 2019. However, to the delight of her fans, Dion is igniting hope about her return to touring.
Celine Dion Is ‘Working Very Hard’ For Her Comeback
Celine Dion, for the first time in a while, directly addressed the question of her return to touring. In an interview with Vogue France, the singer revealed that touring has been on her mind while she was away. When asked if she would ever go back on stage, she stated, “I can’t answer you. Because for four years, I told myself that I would not go back, that I am ready, that I am not ready…”
Although the five-time Grammy winner doesn’t have a set period in mind, she strongly believes her body will let her know when the time comes. “I don’t know… My body will tell me. On the other hand, I don’t want to just wait. It’s morally hard to live from day to day. It’s difficult. I’m working very hard, and tomorrow will be even more difficult,” she confessed. Nevertheless, Dion has no intention of giving up.
“But there is one thing that will never stop, and that is wanting. It’s the passion. This is the dream. It’s determination.”
Celine Dion Is Learning To Live With Stiff-Person Syndrome
As Celine Dion waits for her body to inspire her return, she is learning to take it one day at a time with the neurological disorder, per Healthline. Stiff-Person syndrome is an extremely rare neurological disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. One of its main symptoms is painful muscle spasms — something Dion admitted she suffered.
During the interview, the 56-year-old gave insight into how she manages her day-to-day life with the disease.
“Five days a week I do athletic, physical and vocal therapy. I work on my toes as well as my knees, calves, fingers, singing, voice… This is the condition with which I must learn to live now by stopping questioning myself.”
Dion also got candid about her emotional struggles with her health problem. She admitted that she often found herself questioning life, saying “I started by saying to myself: why me? What happened? What did I do? Am I responsible?” However, she has now realized that life doesn’t give answers. Hence, she is determined to do the best with what she has.
“I have this disease for some unknown reason. I have two choices,” she told the publication. “Either I train like an athlete, and I work super hard, or I disconnect, and it’s over, I stay at home, I listen to my songs, I stand in front of my mirror, and I sing to myself. I chose to work with all my body and all my soul, from head to toe with a medical team.”
With a resilience like Celine Dion’s, fans can’t help but be hopeful she will be back soon!
