There has been quite a bit of chaos swirling around the upcoming Warner Bros. film The Batman: Ben Affleck dropped out of the director’s chair, then news came out that the film was facing an almost complete rewrite, and, most recently, Matt Reeves taking over as the director of the film. Luckily, many other DC Comics films seem to be a bit more on track, and their most recently announced is a take on an ally of Batman: Nightwing.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Nightwing will get his own solo film. Chris McKay, who recently directed The LEGO Batman Movie, will direct the unnamed Nightwing film. The script is reportedly being written by Bill Dubuque, who most recently penned The Accountant.

Nightwing may seem like an odd choice, considering he has not been introduced or mentioned in the official DC film universe at this point in time. Nightwing is the alter-ego of Dick Grayson, who began his career as a crime fighter as the original Robin. Grayson’s family was killed during their high-flying circus show, and he used those skills to join with the caped crusader after being adopted by Bruce Wayne.

Michael Cera most recently played Dick Grayson, in McKay’s The LEGO Batman Movie

It seems a bit strange to skip the origin aspect of Grayson’s crime fighting, as the childhood trauma and tutelage under Batman is a huge part of what makes Nightwing what he is. However, with the DC film universe playing catch-up to their counterparts from Marvel, they may want to skip the traditional origin stories in order to establish their fan favorite characters as already part of the universe they are creating.

Stay tuned for more information on the Nightwing solo film as it becomes available.

Excited for Dick Grayson to get his own superhero story? Who do you want to see step into the role? Any particular storyline you would like to see Dubuque and McKay adapt? Let us know in the comments below.
