As soon as you fire up Soulmask, you’ll get to pick between three starting masks. Initially, everything will be overwhelming for new survivors. While customizing these accessories is great and wearing them in a perilous jungle is even better, they have more vital functions. Each mask leans into a particular playstyle of archetype and provides specific bonuses for your character. So, knowing which one to pick will make your journey’s first hours a breeze.

All Starting Masks in Soulmask

After the opening cutscene, your character will reach a temple of sorts and will get to pick one of three starting masks: Civilization, Conquest, and Rich. While you could pick one based on its looks, we advise against it. These masks fit into a playstyle with Civilization leaning to a more melee-focused and aggressive playstyle, Conquest focusing on stealth and evasion, and Rich on ranged damage. Below, we’ll break down each mask and tell you which one is the best to begin with.

Civilization

The Civilization mask focuses on defense and survivability. Most of its skills provide players with defense bonuses, reduced damage taken, and even healing effects. Here are the mask’s traits:

TraitDescription
Stamina SurgeMax Stamina +5 and Max Load +10.
Deep SleepMorale Recovery Speed +50% when sleeping.
Critical BarrierDamage to the head -10%.
Outer ArmorReduces body’s damage taken by 5%.
Sequence ProtectionDefense +10
Healer Mode (Mimicry)During Mimicry Mode, press V HP by 5 every second.

Conquest

The Conquest mask is perfect for those who prefer a more stealthy and careful approach and one we recommend to solo players. It won’t give you a lot of defensive options like Civilization, but it works perfectly in certain scenarios.

TraitDescription
Falling BufferFall damage reduced by 10%.
Noise AbsorptionReduce the noise you make by 10%.
Forbidden TerritoryAwareness experience gained from killing humanoids increases by 5%.
Light DisturbanceConcealment increases by 10%.
Hidden AssaultIncreases the damage you do when attacking from behind by 10%.
Slayer Mode (Mimicry)During Mimicry Mode, 20% increased chance of reducing an enemy’s resilience.

Rich

The most beautiful mask of them all, at least in our opinion, is Rich, and this one focuses on ranged gameplay. This one is great for those who like to take enemies from afar, and its traits are the following:

TraitDescription
Data AnalysisEnables real-time perception of the distance from the target.
Projectile AdjustmentArrow precision increases by 10%.
Hunting GuideAwareness experience gained from killing non-humanoids increases by 5%.
Poison InjectionPoisoned arrows deal 30% more damage.
Deeply FocusedStamina consumption during combat is reduced by 5%.
Sniping Mode (Mimicry)Increases damage dealt by arrows by 15% and increases Crit by 5%.

After a bit of experimentation, we believe the Conquest mask is the best one to get started in Soulmask, especially for solo players. When alone, you need to be more careful as there’s no one to help you. Also, the fall damage reduction, increased backstab damage, and better stealth are a boon during the early hours. However, if you play with others, you can pick any of the other masks, provided you all have a balanced team.
