If Crusader Kings were a cake, its main ingredients would be assassination, betrayal, and forbidden love. Though there’s already enough of this medieval dessert to keep gamers fed well into the next century, the mad minds at Paradox are introducing a major expansion to Crusader Kings 3: Roads to Power. If you’ve ever wanted to execute schemes as a Byzantine noble or wander the world as a Landless Adventurer, you’re in luck. Those are just a few of the bold new directions the game’s going in. Here’s what we know so far about the additional themed events, schemes, lifestyles, government systems, and more.

Roads to Power releases on September 24th, 2024. Those who purchase Chapter 3 will also receive the Legends of the Dead core expansion, a cosmetic pack, and an event pack. Roads to Power aims to expand your already staggering options in Crusader Kings 3 by allowing you to play a wandering mercenary, outlaw, or even fixer. Roaming as a Landless Adventurer allows you to fulfill contracts and build your own base of power, biding your time until you’re strong enough to claim a kingdom of your own. The Byzantine noble, by contrast, entrenches you in a non-feudal system of schemes and power-brokering. Competing against other families in the imperial court can be lucrative when it isn’t deadly.

The allure of greater flexability in Paradox’s strategy game is hard to overstate. Managing a web of Governors with the new administrative system seems like chaos waiting to happen. So does the ability to manage your House’s Family Estate, even when you hold no other land. New buildings, an Influence System, and the opportunity to choose a successor and pass on your earnings after a lifetime of wandering means a world of new content. Paradox has a track record for releasing strong expansions and content packs (Primal Fury, anyone?), but we’ll have to wait until September to see where Roads to Power takes us.

Crusader Kings 3 is available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
