The retail giant, GameStop has faltered a bit. If you’ve shopped at their online store recently you may need to replace your credit card. According to KrebsOnSecurity, there have been alerts from a credit card processor that GameStop was likely compromised by hackers between September 2016 and February 2017.
GameStop took the reigns and confirmed to CNET that they were indeed compromised and did receive notifications that credit card data was taken by intruders and being sold online. They’ve confirmed that they’re working with authoritiesย to address the issue. ย An apology was written on its website:
We regret any concern this situation may cause for our customers. GameStop would like to remind its customers that it is always advisable to monitor payment card account statements for unauthorized charges. If you identify such a charge, report it immediately to the bank that issued the card, because payment card network rules generally state that cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized charges that are timely reported.
With the advent of the digital age, companies have been coming under the virtualย knife for years now. GameStopย has actually been losing its spot as the place to purchase games for awhile now. Digital downloads, mainly from Steam have reigned supreme and is where a ย large number of people get their games. That, and Amazon because Amazon Prime offers a discount to new games if you buy one through them.
This breach of GameStop‘s security is like rubbing salt on an open wound. The company has been struggling to get their footing back in the game-playing field, and now peoples’ credit card info has been taken. The company is working hard to solve the problem.
