The announcement that Deadpool fans have been waiting for ever since the end credits – and likely since it was revealed the original was to be created – teased his appearance in the possible sequel, Cable has been cast. Josh Brolin will play opposite of Ryan Reynolds as the cybernetic (one eyed and one armed), time traveling mercenary in Deadpool 2.
This will be Brolin’s second role as a Marvel character to date, his first being the feature Villain Thanos in The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, all generally small appearances to lead up to a big role. While this might seem like a conflict of interest, the Deadpool movies are a Fox/Sony property.
The role lands Brolin in a unique company, as he joins the short list of actors like Chris Evans and Willem Dafoe, to appear in a Marvel (Multiple as Thanos), DC (Jonah Hex as Jonah Hex), and Fox/Sony (Deadpool 2 as Cable) motion picture. No doubt you can bet that Wade Wilson will be referring to Brolin’s Cable by at least one of those names in the upcoming sequel.
In comics, Nathan Summers (Cable) and Wade Wilson’s names have become synonymous with each other, both as friends and enemies, after the Merc with a mouth messed up a few timelines here and there that he eventually helped Cable fix. While it seems he will play the lead antagonist in Deadpool 2 – with a possible turnaround midway – it’s more than likely that the film will explore the friendlier (yet still sarcastic) side to their relationship.
If not in this film though, there is plenty of time to in the future, because as of now, Brolin is signed on for a four movie contract as Cable. It is unknown whether or not all four of the movies will all belong to the Deadpool franchise; maybe Cable visits the X-Men or maybe gets a spinoff of his own.
