John Cena is saying goodbye to the WWE after over two decades. The wrestler and actor appeared at the franchise’s Money in the Bank event, where he made a major announcement about his future.

After winning the WWE championship belt 16 times in his career, Cena revealed he’s saying goodbye to this chapter of his life.

Emotional Crowds Want Cena to Stay

Cena announced to the crowd at the event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada Saturday, “Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from WWE.”

Fans reacted to the news with boos and chanting no, but Cena explained why the time feels right to him. He also explained that he will continue to be part of WWE RAW’s move to Netflix in January. However, the major events of 2025 will all be his last.

The Beloved Wrestler Elaborated on His Plan in the Post-Show Press Conference

John Cena explained that Wrestlemania 2025 will not be his final event. Rather, it will be his final Wrestlemania. He’s hoping to tour through the year’s entirety, with “tenatively” 30-40 shows on his schedule. He also touched on the fact that while this timing wasn’t his idea and he worked in collaboration with the company.

That’ll be the end of my in-ring competition. Now, part of this business plan that [the WWE] proposed and they accepted, was me remaining in the WWE family in some capacity for an extended time to come. I’ve always said to the audience that the WWE is my home and I love it and just because I physically feel I’m at my end, doesn’t mean I have to distance myself from something I love.

Cena went on to discuss his passion for wrestling, joking about yelling at his TV when he watches Money in the Bank at home. He shared his hopes for an opportunity to share what he’s learned from his journey with other wrestlers coming up in the company.

Imagine having to follow the Attitude Era and carry the company in a G rated era. It’s the hardest thing ever asked of a champion in my opinion. I don’t know anyone that could have done that in the history of this business but @JohnCena one of best and most respectful guys I’ve… pic.twitter.com/EdZNpa9cED
