Jason Vorhees will soon be taking his murderous reign to gamers as the release date for Friday the 13th: The Game has been announced.  The asymmetric multiplayer title will be slashing its way onto PS4, Xbox One and PC May 26, 2017.

Developed by Gun Media and Illfonic, Friday the 13th: The Game will feature one player as the famous masked killer as he hunts down seven, far less powerful, camp counselors at Crystal Lake.  Those are hunting grounds Vorhees, and his mother, know well (sorry if that spoils a movie from 1980). Development for the title was not originally tied to the iconic horror movie franchise and had a working title of Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp.  After the acquisition of the rights, a successful Kickstarter campaign followed raising over $2.1 million.

The launch date announcement trailer for the games shows off plenty of gruesome gameplay as the young victims try their best to stop Vorhees with everything from flare guns to bear traps.  Don’t feel too sorry for Jason though.  His methods to dispatch to camp counselors get pretty creative including holding one’s head in a raging fireplace to crushing some skulls in new and inventive ways.

At launch time Friday the 13th: The Game will be a digital download selling for $40 USD.  It will only have the multiplayer mode at first with a story mode coming at a later time. The title won’t be the first time Jason has made his way to the video game format. There was Friday the 13th game on Commodore 64 in 1985 that of course also took place amongst the camp counselors of Crystal Lake.  Another game by the same title released in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.  Friday the 13th: The Video Game hacked its way onto the PS2 and Vorhees made his way to the current generation of consoles as a playable character in Mortal Kombat X.
