Selena Gomez faced a tough crowd as photos of her plunging velvet dress and heels look went viral last year. In January 2023, the 31-year-old singer stepped onto the Golden Globes red carpet in a stunning velvet gown, one she accessorized with stilettos as she rocked unusual puffy sleeves.
Ditching her ’50s retro looks and polka-dot dresses for an old-school Hollywood vibe, Selena looked a million dollars in her low-neck gown, but not everyone was a fan. While trolls body-shamed her, other comments which weren’t shaming in nature told the Emilia Perez actress that she should’ve picked a different look.

Channeling a grown-up vibe in a curve-hugging black dress in rich black velvets, Selena kept glam as she turned heads with her huge purple sleeves. Rocking a small bust cut-out on her bodice and with a small leg slit flashing some skin, the “Love On” hitmaker bared her shapely arms and shoulders as she smiled for the cameras, with a platform pair of black strappy heels completing her look.
Wearing her hair partly tied up in a chignon bun, Selena rocked a matte face of makeup, applying cheek blush to lift her features as she wore expensive diamond earrings.
Told ‘Unflattering’ Look ‘Not Her Best’
Users on The Daily Mail were quick to comment. Gaining the most likes was a user who simply wrote: “Not her best look.“
“The fit of that dress around the bust is really unflattering,” another said, with a third writing: “Sack the stylist.” More mindful users noted that Selena’s health battles can make her weight fluctuate, but even those being respectful of her Lupus condition said that she should have chosen a better dress for her body shape.
“The styling team must have wanted to show her in the worst light. She looks terrible,” a further user stated.
Selena’s style has proven hit or miss for fans in recent months. In May, the former Disney star received mixed reviews for her Cannes Film Festival outfits, this despite rocking designer brands including Balmain and YSL. Gomez was, however, a massive hit over the Fourth of July as her $99 yellow bathing suit sold out instantly.
Also popular was the above Instagram photo as Selena posed from an ocean-view balcony on Instagram. Dazzling her 426 million followers, she went off-the-shoulder in a black-and-white YSL gown, one even impressing boyfriend Benny Blanco.
