Unlike most modern movies, Wonder Woman announced very early on that it would be using the old fashion method of shooting, using film instead of digital production. Director Patty Jenkins has revealed that there is a very specific reason for that choice.
“I’ve come up on shooting film and working on film for a long time.” She told Fox’s Kevin McCarthy in a recent interview. “There’s a certain type of epic grander escapism that film gives you that you cannot — you will struggle very hard — to get that on video.”
Those who were treated to early screenings of Wonder Woman seem to agree, as many of them have praised the quality of the film and Jenkin’s directing decision. It helps that she is following messy performances by the previous two DC movies to hit theaters, Batman Vs Superman and Suicide Squad, which were both met with poor reception from fans and critics alike.
While she credits to film and says she personally prefers it, she does say that digital has come a long way and has done a lot of great things. She does want to dispel the myth that “you can do everything now on digital.”
Jenkin’s took a lot of inspiration for Wonder Woman from Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was shot on film back in the 80’s. She is not only in her endeavor to shoot modern movies on films, as some of the greatest directors in the past decade also make their movies celluloid, including J.J. Abrams Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino.
While the director is adamant about using film, you’ll have to be the judge for yourself when Wonder Woman is released in theaters June 2, 2017.
