Mariah Carey is dealing with the devastating loss of two close family members this week. The singer has confirmed that her mother, Patricia, has sadly passed away. However, in a shocking turn of events, her sister, Alison, also died on the same day as their mother. Carey released a statement about the losses. Meanwhile, it’s no secret that the We Belong Together songbird has had complicated relationships with both her mother and sister over the years.
According to People Magazine, Mariah Carey released a brief statement revealing that she was shattered by the deaths of both her mother and sister on the same day. Although no cause of death for either woman has been revealed, the singer did share her thoughts in moving comments about the family deaths.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey, 55, told the magazine. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Carey’s mother, Patricia, was also a singer. She studied opra at Juilliard, and worked as a vocal coach. However, the mother and daughter relationship wasn’t always an easy one for Mariah.
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” the singer wrote of life with her mother in her 2020 memoir.
Unfortunately, Mariah Carey’s relationship with her sister, Alison, was also full of drama. Alison even sued the singer over comments in her memoir, per Variety. Meanwhile, Mariah admitted that through all of the pain in their relationship it was “safer” for her “not to have any contact” with Alison, or their brother, Morgan.
Fans are now sending their love and condolences to Mariah Carey after the stunning news that her mother and sister both died over the weekend. For now, the singer seems to be staying quiet and grieving privately for her lost family members.
