Sony’s Sucker Punch is expanding its horizons with new projects, including a sequel to the fan-favorite Ghost of Tsushima. Instead of simply calling it the same name with a 2 at the end, the upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei, will take the story in a new direction entirely, giving it a new identity as well. Ghost of Yotei, and the possibility of future spin-offs, were recently discussed in an interview with creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, published by the New York Times.

Fox and Connell, who are returning as creative leads for Ghost of Yotei, shared insights into the game, which is set 300 years after the events of the story of Jin Sakai. This sequel marks the beginning of a broader franchise, transforming the original game from a standalone experience into a series that will feature at least one film and, more importantly, additional spin-offs.

Ghost of Yotei, the beginning of an official franchise that will include at least one movie and other spinoffs, putting the series alongside emblematic Sony PlayStation titles like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn.

A film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is already underway, with Chad Stahelski, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4. The directors emphasized the core essence of the Ghost series, which is to immerse players in the “enchanting and historical landscape of feudal Japan.”

They went on to add that the inspiration for Ghost of Yotei partly stems from Mount Yotei, prominently featured in the game’s announcement trailer. To capture the essence of the setting, some team members traveled to the mountain and its surroundings. This resulted in the team taking a trip to Shiretoko National Park in northeastern Hokkaido, where Fox recorded natural sounds for the game’s audio design. He described the experience as thrilling, describing the juxtaposition of the park’s stunning beauty with the lurking danger of bears, a sensation they aim to replicate in the game.

Scheduled for release in 2025, Ghost of Yotei promises a new narrative, introducing an original protagonist and exploring a different region of Japan, but the idea of more spin-offs is a highly intriguing one. According to Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch’s communications manager, the story of the sequel of Ghost of Tsushima unfolds in 1603, in the lands around Mount Yotei. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the game is set to offer an exciting new chapter in the Ghost series.
