Blizzard Working on Starcraft Shooter Led by Far Cry Dev, Says Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier

Golly gee willikers, our old friend; Blizzard and shooters, together again

This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Blizzard released Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void back in 2015 and it was the last mainline Starcraft game. Now, nearly a decade after the franchise’s conclusion, Blizzard Entertainment might be looking to revive it again– but in the shooter genre and with a former Far Cry developer as a lead. The report came from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier during his interview with IGN.

During Jason Schreier’s interview with IGN about his upcoming book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, he also revealed that Blizzard is working on a new Starcraft shooter game. Apparently, it’s still in its ‘incubation’ stages, so don’t expect an announcement or release date anytime soon.

More importantly, Jason Schreier also mentioned that none other than Dan Hay is spearheading the project. Dan Hay is a developer who previously worked on Ubisoft’s Far Cry games. If anything, this might be an indication that the unannounced Starcraft shooter is in good hands. Still, it’s probably too early to tell at this point. There’s no news about a Starcraft RTS, sadly.

Not the First Time for Blizzard

One of the reasons why I suggest not getting your hopes up too high is that Blizzard Entertainment has already tried making a Starcraft shooter twice in the past. The two shooters in question were Starcraft: Ghost and a so-called project Ares. Blizzard canceled both games.

With how Blizzard Entertainment also kept canceling their previous projects after the Microsoft acquisition, it’s not too far-fetched to expect Blizzard to cancel this third and unnamed Starcraft shooter. After all, Blizzard also notably canceled a survival game and laid off a big chunk of its former staff and developers after the acquisition.

Still, former Far Cry dev Dan Hay with a small team being retained might spell hope for the unnamed Starcraft shooter if all goes well, according to Jason Schreier. Don’t hold your breath for now.
